Tutoring

"Whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me."

Matthew 18:5

Urgent help needed! Make a difference at George Washington Carver Elementary School.

With our mission to Love, Grow, and Serve, we have an opportunity for community outreach to tutor impoverished children grades 2-8 in Reading and Math at George Washington Carver Elementary, an inner-city school, located at 2200 East 55th Street, Cleveland, OH, which is approximately 20 minutes from Grace Church. This school is under Academic Emergency with the State and they are asking for our help. There is a definite need with our children to prepare them for life skills. Often these children and their tutors form a personal bond through mentoring.

We are one family in Christ and we are called to action to go beyond our church walls to help those in our community who are poor or helpless. This may be the door God uses to open a child's heart to Jesus. There are opportunities available to tutor once a week or as often as your schedule permits.

There is no difference between these children and your children. They have some additional challenges that interfere with learning. In many cases, not all, they:

  • Lack parental direction.
  • Are from fatherless homes, living in poverty.
  • Live on the streets or are homeless.
  • No assistance with homework or access to other resources.
  • Will approach 50% dropout rate.
  • More likely to be imprisoned or use drugs.
Whatever the reason, it's not the children's fault, they need the assistance and encouragement of Christian role models that care about their success. The tutors for this program will work in conjuction with other Alcoa and community volunteers.
Training sessions for new tutors will be held October 15th from 10:00am-12:00pm and a second class will be held October 22nd at Grace Church from 10:00am-12:00pm in room 10. Tutoring will start the week of October 17th and a brief orientation and tour of the school will be provided.
Through your participation in this important ministry, you model Jesus' command for us to be the salt and light in the world through our good works (Matthew 5:13-16). Please pray to our Loving Father to help you reach out in love to make a difference to the children who share our world.
